I recently made a video about my decision to have a cochlear implant and what is important to take into account when making any health decision. It’s wonderfully illustrated by Karen Morley – thank you Karen! But here’s a confession – I have made a mistake in it, to which I’m grateful to have been alerted by a colleague. She says that whilst I’m right that hearing about the experiences of someone’s aunty is anecdotal, “if you had read some well-done qualitative research about adults’ experiences of getting a cochlear implant, I hope that would have been helpful and is certainly legitimate evidence.” Gosh yes. I’m only sorry I hadn’t thought of it at the time (where did my brain go that week?!). So please bear that in mind when you watch the video.
We showed this as part of a recent Cochrane UK webinar, in which doctors and patients discussed experiences of health decision-making and things to consider. You can see a recording of the webinar here: https://youtu.be/A5q_Ur7sKE0
The videos do have captions so just be sure to switch on CC when you watch them!

What a pleasure and a privilege it was to illustrate this for you Sarah – thank you!

Hi, the external parts of the cochlear implant come off at night, so there’s no problem with sleeping! I don’t have tinnitus, but this is something you might want to discuss with your hearing professionals.
